sharpendphotography : personal » climbing » red rocks, april 06 (more to come...) Up one level
we took a quick trip into the the black corridor for some evening climbing. wake up jen! no squandering daylight! susie edges up spotted eagle (5.10a) at the avian wall... a stark contrast to the ultra-steep trophy wall just a couple hundred feet away. bowie preps for the epinephrine chimneys by reading the black diamond manual for his alien. bowie searches the guidebook for some reputedly steep climbs in the vicinity at the concordian trophy wall.
jen pulls through the low crux on keep your powder dry (5.12b)... ... and celebrates! me cranking through fear and loathing III (5.12a), my first 5.12 redpoint. incidentally, this was also bowie's first 12a redpoint, ~12 years ago during the first climbing era of bowie. (photos JH) jen gets in line for the infinite slab that is prince of darkness (5.10c) on the incredible black velvet wall. we only made it to the second belay before bailing due to time, weather, and toe/ass pain. this was the last time i ever saw jen smile.
jen dynos for the other side of the stream on the approach to our mandatory trad epic. in this case, we're on our way to the great red book. working the exit slab of keep your powder dry (5.12b) at trophy wall. (sweet photo JH) approaching the gallery (tiny climber above susie's backpack was epicing on yak crack for > 1 hour). bowie hangs draws and works out the beta for one of the steepest (and sweetest) routes i've ever seen, trophy (5.12c).
susie was here. bryan picks up the pieces of his favorite $5 pair of sunglasses and tries to move on. (photo BH) on the approach to the trophy wall. enjoying a good rest before the crux of keep your powder dry (5.12b). (awesome photo JH)
